A miracle in Malawi

ack in 2002, Fombe was indeed a troubled place.
People were worn down by poverty and the spread and impact of HIV. Children were malnourished. The village Chief, along with many other local men, had turned despairingly to alcohol. Hope was in short supply.
But when Tearfund’s local partner Eagles joined forces with the church in Fombe, an amazing transformation beganÂ…
The church motivated and equipped its community for change with crop seedlings and livestock loans, and with knowledge and advice.
A volunteer group was formed to help the neediest people, and an HIV support group was set up to help those living with the virus and reduce its spread.
The village Chief led the men away from alcohol. He’s been sober for three years now, and was even invited to meet Malawi’s President to discuss poverty.
People started sharing skills, caring for and helping one another. They grew in confidence and unity. And as the transformation spread, more and more people became part of the miracle.
Today, the villagers in Fombe are full of ideas, enthusiasm and hope. They themselves are building an ever better future for their children.
Fruit that lasts
For followers of Jesus, what follows death will not be a surprise. It will be a fulfilment. And the history we leave behind, and the seeds we have sown in our lives, will continue to bear fruit.
Legacies are a unique way of ensuring that these God-inspired good works and habits of generosity can continue to restore hope and save lives in communities such as Fombe. Even after God has called us home.
